Be aware of breast cancer ladies and gentlemen. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the month to think pink. Supporters of breast cancer awareness are celebrating 25 years of awareness, education, and empowerment as reported on the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) official website.
Breast cancer is the second most common disease in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society; one out of eight women will be diagnosed with some type of breast cancer during their life. White women are more likely to get breast cancer than any other ethnic or racial group, according to Susan G. Komen hotline (1-877 GO KOMEN or 1-877-465-6636), but African American women are more likely to die. Be mindful that breast cancer is not a disease only found in women, men can be diagnosed with the disease as well even though it is rare. Less than one of every 100 cases of breast cancer in the U.S. occurs in men.
We must think of our health as a priority no matter how young we are. Some measures that can be taken to reduce the risks of being diagnosed are: eating healthy, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and limiting alcohol intake. Remember to take the initiative to check for lumps every month and get regular mammograms from your doctor usually every 1-2 years.
Be a supporter of breast cancer awareness every day, not just in the month of October. Are you thinking pink this month?
